troy
the Township of troy, established in 1815, was one of the first townships in bradford County established by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Nestled in a valley between the sheltering Endless Mountains, troy is the center of a rural agricultural area of gently rolling fields and pastures.
troy was once a co-county seat with Towanda. Because of the difficulty of traveling to the courthouse in Towanda from the western side of bradford County by horse and buggy, the state legislature passed a law in 1870 naming troy a Half-Shire town with the right to hold court sessions twice a year. Now called the Van Dyne Civic Building, the troy Half-Shire Courthouse is the only one known in Pennsylvania.
For many years troy's leading exports were butter, buckwheat and boys. At one time, troy was the exclusive supplier of butter to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
Fine buckwheat grown by local farmers was ground into flour for some of the tastiest pancakes in the east. the boys served their country in every armed conflict. Maple syrup production is celebrated at the annual Maple Festival held in Alparon Park in troy each April.
